How to shoot a jump shot?

Let me fist start by saying, there are many ways to teach how to shoot a jump shot. I’ve learned over the years many coaches work under the school of the thought that if it goes in its okay. Look at a player like Shawn Marion, he is in the NBA making millions of dollars and he doesn’t use the proper shooting technique to accomplish a jump shot. He also has a pretty low shooting percentage as well. I guess the message that I am trying to make clear is that there is a right way and a wrong to anything, even shooting a jump shot.

The correct way to shoot a jump shot is first to work on getting your shoulders and your feet square or parallel to the target. You might want to have your feet about shoulder width or maybe a little less apart. Balance is the key here. Second your shooting elbow should be close to your body and the ball should be in your fingertips, not on the palm of your hand. I feel that if you put your shooting hand slightly to the side of the ball you get the proper action when you straighten your arm to shoot. The ball will move into the proper position similar to how you arm moves on a boxing jab which should put your hand directly behind the ball during your release. Third you will need to coil the hand so you can see wrinkles on the back of your wrist. Once you straighten your arm, you should snap the wrist forward on the release. Lastly, you will need to bring the basketball to a position in front of your face and high enough so that you can see where the defense may be. I do teach to shoot the ball on the way up and not necessarily at the top of your jump.

A famous coach once said “basketball is a war in that offensive weapons are developed first and it always takes a while for the defense to catch up”.

Plyometrics Training

What is Plyometrics?

Plyometrics Training are exercises that enables the muscles to reach maximum force in the shortest possible time. The muscles are loaded with an eccentric (lengthening action) followed immediately by a concentric (shortening action).

There have been a wide variety of training studies that show how plyometrics training can improve performance in vertical jumping, sprinting, and overall agility. It appears also that a relatively small amount of plyometric training is required to improve the performance in these areas.

Q. What is the proper way to shoot a jump shot?

A. First always square your shoulders to the basket then shoot the ball from your head and snap your wrist on the release or at the top of the shot.

Q. How can I become a more consistent foul shot shooter?

A. Try to relax at the line, again remember to square your shoulders to the basket then aim for the back of the rim and shoot the ball form your head. Remember again to snap your wrist on the release or at the top of the shot.

Q. How can I become a better ball handler?

A. You must stay low when you dribble and concentrate on keeping your fingers spread wide on the ball while making sure your head is up seeing the court. Practice dribbling the ball constantly with each hand while moving forward until you can achieve a full sprint with each hand.

Q. How can I jump higher?

A. Well the best way increase your vertical leap is to jump rope. I usually suggest this exercise first as it won’t hurt the joints while a child is growing and it’s fun. Try 50 times on each leg and then 100 times using both legs. If you do this as a daily routine you should some vertical improvement. Additionally, I also encourage long distance running. Not only does this increase stamina, but it also build’s the leg muscles which should help increase your vertical.

Q. How do I set a proper pick or screen?

A. Always make sure you plant your feet firm on the floor. You should keep your hands down and shoulders square to the opponent. Once contact is made you can cut or pivot to the basket for the classic pick and roll option.

Q. How can I be a better rebounder for my team?

A. Rebounding is hard work even the best rebounders have to work hard on conditioning. Additionally, having good anticipation helps as well. One principle seems to always be constant and that is if a shot is taken from the right side of the court, most of the rebounds will be of the opposite side of the basket and if a shot is taken from the left side of the basket most of the rebounds will be on the right side or opposite of where the shot was taken from. Most of the shots taken from the middle of the floor will tend to fall right in front of the basket or come straight back when missed. Knowing these principles should at least put you in the proper position to be a more effective and efficient rebounder.

Q. How do I become a better defensive player?

A. First you should remember to use you feet and not your hands. Good foot movement is the key to good defense. Then always try to keep the opponent in front of you and the best way to do that is to focus on the opponent’s core or midsection. Don’t allow head and ball fakes to get you off balance, just concentrate on the core.

Q. How do I get the ball from my teammates more?

A. Well, it helps to make an aggressive move to the basket, or to the spot you want the ball or even just away from the defense. Additionally, it’s okay to let your teammates know you want the ball by calling for it and or hold up your hand. Never just hope they are going to see you, especially if they are on the other side of the court.

Q. What kind of shoe should I wear?

A. I would always suggest a high top basketball shoe or a mid ankle type basketball shoe when playing hoops. You want to try and protect ankles from rolling over as best as possible. No shoe will totally eliminate this type of injury, but if it happens it may prevent it from being severe. Additionally, make sure the shoe is comfortable on your foot!

Q. How do I keep my healthy after practice or a game?

A. Always stretch legs, back, and arms before and after you play. This practice will increase the proper recovery time for muscles. Also remember to replenish your fluids regularly during and after workouts.
